I can't really remember what the episodes were, but....

I started watching Doctor Who last year, and watched all of Nine's season/s. And I loved the shit out of it. He was kind of a jerk, but he seemed conflicted and I never felt like I was supposed to agree with the more fucked up things he did. He was just an anti-hero who fucks up sometimes.

Then he died and Ten popped up and holy shit. The first three episodes he was such an asshole. And the moral was like... "Be an asshole, kids!" and I had to quit watching the show because I was like, "Nope, not sitting through more episodes of this bullshit."

Was it the self-righteousness and self-centered hypocrisy? Because...yeah, that was basically a "love him despite it/because of it" or "hate him because of it" deal. Very hard to ignore. I fell in the former camp, but I get why people wouldn't.

If you're still interested in the show, that angle pretty much dissipated when Eleven came around. He's a bit of a jerk too, (I think every single Doctor is), but he's more of a thoughtless bitchy jerk who always gets bitten in the ass (or at least made fun of) for his jerkiness.

Ah, but he is not rewarded for his jerkiness at all. In fact, things become absolute shit as a result of it. He ruins lives, and over time he comes to hate himself for it.

The character arc is actually pretty fantastic.

On paper, yes.

When you have to watch it episode after episode for three years in a show about a kooky nutjob in a blue box who turns up to save the day from aliens and monsters, not so much. It's a long time to string viewers along for.
