Exactly! The mess is also really, really not worth the hassle. I'd rather just eat other types of melon.

Unless it's been cut up into fruit salad and you can use a fork, it's impossible to eat watermelon without making a mess of yourself. Also, you can't put a wedge of watermelon on your plate at a picnic without making everything else on the plate soggy.

But it is quite refreshing on a hot summer day, which is all it really needs to be!

I've read on someone's blog a long time ago that they were suspicious of watermelon, because it tastes too much like a vegetable to be considered a fruit. They come from the same family as cucumbers so I totally get that.

As an additional note, watermelons are the largest "true" berries!

They don't really taste like a vegetable though, imo.

Agreed. They're kind of nice but not tasty enough to really justify the hype. I would much rather just have strawberries.
