Everyone starts out as a casual fan of something. It takes time to become an expert, so unless you study in secret before you make your fandom "debut" there will be a period where you will be somewhat ignorant about the topic.

I think part of the problem is that a lot of people enjoy the ego boost that comes with knowing more about something than someone else, which in and of itself is common and not really a problem, but - perhaps due to some social awkwardness or something - some people are unable to express themselves in these situations without acting angry towards those they view as less-knowledgeable.
