Re: Mass shootings and The Mentally Ill

Yeah, I'm with you. Mental health care is extremely important, and it's underfunded and underprioritized in the USA. We should fix it, because people are suffering needlessly. But there's no evidence that even a perfect mental healthcare system would stop people from committing mass shootings. A mental healthcare system based on neutralizing threats instead of helping people would get really abusive really fast, pretty much by design.

I think we can work to change the narratives in our culture that romanticize destructive acts like mass shootings, so people don't see it as an option. We can control access to the most dangerous weapons so that when people do want to do harm, they can't do as much. We can't magic away everyone's mental illnesses and suddenly eradicate violent crime.
