I don't mind big sprawly worlds with casts of dozens: if they're vividly written, it's pretty easy to keep everything sorted in your head.

However, my misty memory of LotR was that it was like reading lace. Very intricate, but after a while a lot of it blurred together. ~ Having said that, I do give the guy props for creating such an incredibly (some would say obsessively) detailed world. I don't know where LotR fits into the history of fantasy literature, but I expect that he was one of the first to be so vast.

YES! That is the perfect description!

Having said that, I do give the guy props for creating such an incredibly (some would say obsessively) detailed world.

Absolutely! Shame about it being as dull as watching paint dry.

LotR is the basis for most of modern fantasy. Dungeons and Dragons is basically the races of Middle-earth with the serial numbers rubbed off.
