I guess I just don't get to see writers write a kid who is abused like Ritsuka with any sort of honesty.

Ritsuka's abuse from his mother, his reactions to it, are something I find fairly realistic. And I like that while his mother is clearly wrong, she's also not evil.

So I disagree with having issues makes a character less deep. It's how the writer handles it.
