Wow. I had no idea that The Bloggess is considered fandom.

Anything can be considered fandom. After all, we did get a secret about The Weather Channel the other day.

Is she the one who kept harassing Nathan Fillion for a photo with a twine ball or something? I caught just the tail end of that drama, and not really enough to know what was going on other than he apparently politely turned her down and her fans went apeshit.

Yep. Except he never acknowledged the tweets iirc. http://thebloggess.com/2012/02/youre-ruining-nathan-fillion-for-me-nathan-fillion-alternate-title-but-i-forgive-you/

That was a really obnoxious post, but ngl, I am amused by random geek celebrities holding strange objects.

I don't know anything about her, but if you're presenting her actions accurately, then I agree completely. That's just yucky. Celebrities are not public property--or property at all, for that matter.

i'm biased, of course, because i love the bloggess, but i feel like her requests are pretty harmless. where it gets off course is with the fans, who hardcore go after people and fail to see the humor in having a ridiculous quest. i have plenty of ridiculous quests myself, so i guess i just see the harmless humor in making it a priority in life to get a picture of someone with a ball of twine, but i never really felt like the bloggess was really serious about any of it. some of her readers, though - no sense of the absurd. no sense of boundaries. no sense of humor about it. she's not really one of those "i'll release my minions on you" kind of people, imo. more so like, "whoa. chillax there minions. it's really not that serious."

and i suppose we have the same brand of zany appreciation, she and i. i suppose i can see where it might get too precious. i feel that way about allie bosch (is that right?) sometimes.

somehow i think she'd be really amused by a hater secret on fs.

I like her. But she mostly spends her time trying to raise awareness for depression and other mental illnesses these days along with her silliness. And the twine thing was totally blown out of proportion by her fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
GOD YES.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I neither love nor dislike her, but I followed the twine saga almost in real time and my perception of it was that she merely put it out there as a joke, never actually harrassed Nathan Fillion himself (or any of the other celebrities she DID get weird pictures from) a thousand times on Twitter for the picture or got more and more aggressive towards him personally the more he didn't acknowledge her. I definitely got the impression it was her fans/minions (whom she was unaware she would have that kind of power over) who went over to him and, because he wasn't as obliging as Matthew Broderick, Wil Wheaton, and Jeri Ryan (as is his right not to be), they reacted negatively because how DARE he not want to play along with a silly game?!

So yeah, this situation was kind of an unfortunate clash of circumstances. She was bound to run into someone who wouldn't want to indulge her and it happened to be Fillion, whose fans can get REALLY passionate and obnoxious (hello, Firefly, if I never hear about that show again it will not be enough), so they automatically assumed this random crazy blogger chick was harrassing their precious geek god.

(Ngl, coming myself from the outskirts of the Castle fandom, it was kind of fascinating to watch that whole thing unfold. Talk about the randomest fandom collision ever.)

This sounds a good deal more likely to me. I don't follow her closely at all, but it seemed strange to me that she would go all freaky-stalker chick when I wasn't looking.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going to make a Firefly secret now just to bother you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it! For the lulz :D

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I misread the secret and thought it said that she sent pictures of herself to random celebrities with random objects, and thought that was the coolest thing ever. Then I reread it and got it. So, yeah. Not cool.

... I kind of want to start sending pics of myself with random stuff to random celebrities now.

It wasn't just her crazy fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
For everyone who thinks it's a case of the blogger making one teensy request and then her fans getting out of hand, it's not quite that simple. She kept up the whole "OMG Nathan Fillion won't send me a pic of himself holding twine" for a year. A YEAR. This included blog entries and tweeting him repeatedly. Her justification is that oh well, he didn't respond, so she kept doing it.

No response IS a response, lady. When Fillion finally did respond, he made it clear that the repeated requests had made him uncomfortable. Only then did the Blogess say that maybe he should be left alone. Wow, ya think? Way to go, Blogess.
