No, not "everyone". Maybe a lot of people, but not everyone.

He WAS putting the whole thing on as an act! We know this by the end of the episode when we see that he's still alive and just pretended to commit suicide and ring John so he fell for it.

So why would he have been really crying?

A couple reasons. He didn't know his plan would work. He knew that what he was about to do would destroy John. He may not really die but it is still an emotionally charged situation. People get teary eyed listening to certain songs. Listening to your best friend as he begs you not to kill yourself would be pretty moving.

He knew that what he was about to do would destroy John.

I dunno. Considering he treated John like shit for that entire series, I find that hard to fit in with Sherlock's character. He sat back with his feet up as John - an ex-soldier with PTSD - went through a terrifying fear experiment, so I don't see how he'd be as cut up about hurting John's emotions again.

Plus Moffat told everyone not to 'sentimentalize' things or something like that.

This. Just because he wasn't actually going to die didn't mean saying goodbye to John was easy.

And I doubt John (or anyone else) would have been able to see Sherlock's face clearly enough to see tears. So there would be no reason to fake the facial expressions.
