Yeah I'm not really sure what all the rage about her is all about. Generic Disney villain to me, but for some reason people go gaga over her.

I think it might be something to do with the fact that she's slightly less 2-dimensional than the rest of the characters. When your film is basically The Airhead and The Jock go up against The Baddie and there's no character development to speak of, those little moments of cunning e.g. the crow become more meaningful.

That said, I love this movie, mainly because it's beautiful and the soundtrack is glorious, and I don't mind a bit of flatpack character building in a generic fairytale

Maleficent is my personal favorite Disney villain because she makes for a badass dragon and her name sounds awesome. Is that shallow? X)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
She turns into a fucking dragon. And she has devil horns. And she lives in a scary castle, is accompanied by scary music and can summon 'all the powers of hell!'

Also her voice actor was fucking amazing.

And her clothes are dramatic/amazing (dramazing?)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
And she made the lifes of a young woman and her family a living hell just because they didn't invite her to a party.
That's fucking evil right there.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Because as evil as she is, she's damn classy. She's not a generic villain, really. She's not what you expected of villains at the time it was made.

Maleficent is cool and all, but I feel like Jafar, Ursula, and Scar made a much bigger impression on me when I was a kid. Maybe it's because they had Villain Songs (well Jafar had a dark reprise of "Prince Ali").

Actually, this was the main reason I was never particularly scared or intimidated by them (with the exception of Frollo). It just made them all more...accessible? I'm not sure of the word, but it just made them less like forces of villainy and just pieces of the story, I guess.

Not to mention Maleficent is one of the few Disney villains who A) never has any moments of goofiness or humor to make her less scary, and B) is actually threatening and powerful. Not to say Lady Tremaine or the Evil Queen didn't stand out in their movies, it's just they were on a much smaller scale than "All the powers of Hell" Maleficent.

Villain songs work wonders, yes. 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' and 'Be Prepared' were awesome.

Though if I'm picking villain songs ... 'Hellfire'. I have no idea how that managed to make it into a Disney film, considering the implications, but it was awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's her design, her voice actor, the music accompanying her, her onscreen presence, and the general threat she looms with. She can turn into a dragon, summon the forces of hell, has MINIONS (incompetent though they are), a castle, and, oh yeah, DRAGON.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a kid, Maleficent was cool because 'awesome scary lady who turns into a dragon'. Which, actually, is still pretty cool.

When I came back to the movie as an adult, though, Maleficent was cool because ... You know the scene in the dungeon? Where she has Phillip in chains and she's messing with his head? The way she does it is to promise him that she will let him go. When he's too old and decrepit to do anything, when everything that ever mattered to either him or Aurora is gone, when Aurora, beautiful as ever in her sleep, will be woken by him as a doddering old man.

"And now, the gates of the dungeon part, and our prince is free to go his way. Off he rides, on his noble steed, a valiant figure, straight and tall! To wake his love with 'love's first kiss', and prove that True Love conquers all!"

She was just ... one of the most astoundingly vicious of the Disney villains. Powerful as all hell, could only be taken down when someone actually went out and killed her on screen, and ... evil in a no-punches-pulled sort of way. It made her awesome to watch, and creepy as hell.
