Whilst this is all true, it seems you'd have to add the fact that a substantial number of Americans have a distorted view of what it means to be overweight, and what a standard diet, or portion sizes are.

When I was in Alabama, and frequently since online, I've seen people espouse honestly bizarre beliefs, seemingly in good faith, about if they as an under six foot adult man weighed less then 200lbs they'd be underweight. Or just how much extra they were stacking onto their plates compared to the rest of the world.

It's not like fast food and restaurant chains are lacking blame for warping senses of portions. As a kid I always had the idea of needing to eat everything on my plate, but restaurant portions are huge. As an adult I usually take home and make multiple meals out of any restaurant food I buy, or share a few dishes between multiple people, but the industry isn't exactly encouraging restrained eating.
