Because you are not an island, your personal choices effect others, and you don't have a personal right to stuff your face without critique.

Do you feel this strongly about alcoholics who need liver transplants, or smokers who smoke themselves to death? Or is it just fat people who get you upset?

And how does what a fat person eats affect you? I'm really not sure how that works. Please enlighten me. Because unless that fat person is also holding you down and force-feeding you, it truly does not.

Yes?

It effects me, quite apart from the economic damage and so forth, but mostly because someone harming themselves whilst we stand back lessens us all, and we have an obligation to stop someone doing that much damage to their body through their personal choices.

Now the damage by legislation knocking the pizza out of their hand would be worse then the benefits, and people sure have a right to live how they choose - but that doesn't mean we don't equally have the right to encourage them to stop.

Yes, but encouraging them to feel shame and self-loathing and self-hatred and bitterness lessens us all just as much. Absolutely, we should be clear about the health benefits of losing weight & the basics of diet and nutrition and exercise. But that's not at all the same thing as "YOU'RE A FUCKING TERRIBLE LAZY SACK OF SHIT FOR BEING FAT, YOU LAZY WORTHLESS SACK OF SHIT." Which is exactly what you're doing here. And that kind of approach doesn't help anyone - EVEN IF you're helping them be more physical healthy, you're doing just as much emotional damage to them to counterbalance it.

Ah, concern trolling. I see.

Ah, no real refutation so you use the most trite our possible from actually answering the points made, I see.

I gave the anon troll all the consideration s/he deserves.

Except when you fat shame people, you're not telling them, "hey, your health habits aren't the best and you could really be hurting yourself down the line!" When people insult Cassandra Claire about her weight, they're not saying that Cassandra Claire is a valuable human being and she should change what she's doing so she can have a longer, healthier life. They're saying she's gross and ugly and unlovable and a failure.

Want to have a conversation about healthy eating and exercise? Sure! But THIS IS NOT THAT. Telling people that they're gross ugly unlovable failures is not going to make them think about their health. It is going to hurt their health! Believing that other people are going to see you as a gross ugly unlovable failure, and maybe even believing that they are right, is not healthy!

And shame on you for implying that fat people are constantly eating, and they wouldn't be fat anymore if they just stopped constantly eating. That might describe some people, but it doesn't describe everyone.

As a fat person, yeah, pretty much this.

Telling me I'm ugly, unlovable, hideous, that no one will ever find me attractive, that I'm unhealthy and disgusting, etc. because I'm fat (for reasons that are well beyond my control!) is what led to my attempting suicide something like eight or nine times before I was fifteen. I've attempted several times since and have suffered severe depression and suicidal ideation for years and years.

What helps, let's see - it's definitely not the shaming and name-calling from fatphobic assholes like the one you're responding to. That made it worse. What helped was finding people who actually support me and love me NO MATTER WHAT. Who don't give a fuck about my weight as long as I'm healthy and happy. Who think I'm beautiful - the whole fucking package, not, "you'd be so pretty if you lost weight" or that shaming bullshit. THAT helps.

But by all means, fatphobic douchebags. Keep driving people like me to suicide. I'm sure it makes you feel better to know that end result there - you'd probably be happy to think of less ugly fat people in the world!

(Sorry for the tl;dr. This whole thread/discussion has SEVERELY triggered me and I need to back away now.)
