Except that all those reasons that contribute to people getting fatter can be overcome. Genetic predisposition is just that: it's easier to get fat, but it's not unavoidable. Same with medical conditions and not being able to exercise. You still need to eat more than the required daily amount in order to get fat.

People just have lost all sense of how much food they actually need to eat and what is excess. And it isn't unhealthy to be occasionally hungry.

AYRT

And I've said that eating healthy is good and important? I don't know where you're getting that I don't think people should eat healthy, just that health and not weight should be the focus.

Also, where are you getting that most fat people think that it's unhealthy to be occasionally hungry? Most of the fat people I know put on the weight during special circumstances (nervous eating during a really stressful time, keeping up with teenage eating habits after they stopped being a teenager, having babies, suddenly becoming disabled, etc) or were always big but ate a normal amount. My social circle is probably not representative of the general population, but I don't know one single person who thinks that being occasionally hungry is not okay.

Education is important and letting people know it's okay to be hungry sometimes is good, but it's not always that simple.

YES THIS the special circumstances. I gained roughly 30 to 40lbs in the last five years whilst INCREASING my exercise. Some of that weight gain was muscle, but some of it was fat gained during my swineflu clusterfuck (swineflu + three colds + worst case of strep throat EVER complete with fever dreams and night sweats + various other things, all culminating in bronchitis, over a six-month period), and some of it was gained while finishing a degree (read: being strapped to a chair 70+ hours/week, NO time to even EAT a decent meal, let alone MAKE it, if I was going to finish on deadline). Add to this that my family's asthma finally hit me, and that made any outdoor winter activity and super-hard aerobics (or even dancing hard for seven minutes) a no-go (at least until I can get an inhaler).

Yet I'm more active and in better shape now than I ever was a teenager. I eat better (lots more vegetables). But I'm still technically overweight.

My husband weighs less than me. He eats way more than I do, and will frequently enjoy piles of red meat and cheese and fried things while I eat a salad with minimal dressing and toppings. Even if we do have the same thing, I'll eat much much less than him. We both have sedentary lifestyles (me in front of a computer at work, him in front of a computer at home). I frequently skip lunch because I'm working hard or I just don't want to eat anything around my workplace. I don't really drink sodas except for the occasional one but until recently he hardly drinks anything else (I actually got him to drink water instead, thank goodness, I was terrified his liver was just going to say "f u" and leave).

I know what it means to "be occasionally hungry", as most work days I'm hungry for most of it. Heck, I'm at work and hungry right now because I have to work late. I eat less than my husband and eat better than him. I probably get a tad more exercise because I walk around the office while he just walks to the bathroom and back. And yet, he's losing weight while I'm gaining it. What now, anon?

If you are gaining weight, you are eating more than you need, even if it doesn't feel like it. People do often underestimate what they eat and office workers need very little compared to people doing more physical work.

Unfortunately you can't compare yourself to your husband or to anyone else. For all we know, your husband might have an intestinal disorder that prevents him from absorbing everything, so he won't gain weight no matter how much he eats. It isn't fair, but some people can get away with it.

Being occasionally hungry does not mean starving yourself, but that people should avoid snacking constantly. Skipping meals can be a major factor in your gaining weight, because it is really stressful and messes up your body. It's better to have regular smaller meals during the day than to starve yourself and then eat one huge meal.

"If you are gaining weight, you are eating more than you need, even if it doesn't feel like it."

Not necessarily. The human body secretes several chemicals and hormones - cortisol and epinephrine, most notably - that prompt the digestive tract and glands to go into "starvation mode" when you're under great stress. When your body is storing everything, you may gain weight, whether or not you're actually embodying (no pun intended) unhealthy eating habits.

I packed on a few pounds this semester after I came down with the flu, followed shortly by pinkeye when my sinuses backed up. My normal regimen of five-times-weekly swimming was drastically interrupted. Combine that with the fact that my body was stressed both from a very nasty sickness and from catching up to my eighteen credit hours, and the weight is very easily explainable. (I was eating no more than usual.)

In addition, the "right weight" for every person is going to be different. The body is not a furnace and not every person uses calories the same way. I am a size twelve and hardly ever get sick, the flu notwithstanding. In fact, I got over the worst of the fever and aches within three days. My father, on the other hand, is over six feet tall and is pencil-thin, yet he can hold on to colds for over a month. Evolutionarily speaking, it's far more healthy to hold on to a bit of extra poundage - for protection against sickness AND for reproductive potential - than to engage in diets that make your weight constantly fluctuate. Honestly, fluctuating weight in times of "feast and famine" has been pretty thoroughly debunked by evolutionary scientists. A body type that goes from thin to fat over and over would not only kill you faster, but would nigh-on destroy your reproductive capabilities.

By skipping your lunch, you're altering your metabolism. Since you're not eating food, your body thinks you need to store fat during the time periods you're not eating.

Basically: You're not losing weight because you absolutely need to eat 5 small meals instead of 2 or 3 large meals.

most peoples metabolisms aren't quite that schitzoprhenic.

Eat less calories a day then you need and lose weight is still true in your case as well.
