No, I think "default gift" is a good way of describing it.

Or, you have people like my grandma, who gave a lot of random gifts. She liked to buy a lot of random things from catalogs and the Home Shopping Network, and it felt like they were then given out at random. One year, I got this strange blanket that was really small, made out of faux velvet, and had "Sarah Ferguson" embroidered in the corner (apparently is was some brand by the Duchess of York herself).

In that case, I wasn't bothered because I do think she had good intentions. But her gifts were interesting sometimes.
