Yes, they had military backstory.

And you know Arthur's notebook? The one he's writing in when Cobb talks about kicks and catharsis? Apparently the left hand page has notes and such, while the right hand pages just says, in all caps and underlined:

"EAMES"

Their canon backstory is just "military"?

Nothing about their relationships, how they met and all that sort of stuff?

Pretty weak and nothing that isn't featured in many, many fic already.

All that was said is that their rivalry began while they were working on dream tech for the military. No word on why Arthur was apparently keeping tabs on Eames.

Oh. Well. That was kind of disappointing, to be honest.
