I'm not transgender, so I could be wrong, but my guess would be because sometimes people aren't really aware that they're transgender or haven't come to terms with/acknowledged it when they enter into a relationship? It's not really that they're willfully deceiving people; it may be something that they've thought or had feelings about but never fully acknowledged. My best friend in high school was a transwoman who originally identified as a gay man. It wasn't until after high school and a lot of soul-searching that she finally began identifying as a transwoman. At the time, she was in a relationship with a gay man. She hadn't entered into the relationship with him looking to trick him or thinking, I'm a woman but I'm going to get involved with a gay man anyway. She just happened to realize some things about herself and came out while in that relationship.
