Ugh, after his reaction to the Erisol sprite and his relationship bungling, I wonder whether he is really clueless or... well, knocked in the head.

there is a hypothesis floating around that all those knocks to the head have given him legit mental damage

(the big "clues" being used is that caliborn actually said something to the effect that jake really had mental damage when describing the kids, plus the fact that he seemed to be more coherent and had a better memory at the start of the act, and as the events progressed he started forgetting things and getting more clueless)
