Or if something happens in their relationship that so deeply affects one or the other or both of them that they aren't the same people anymore. The pain that can result from trying to maintain a friendship with someone in those circumstances can and often does more harm than good.

True enough. I think in most cases though if both parties aren't being douche-bags a break-up can end amicably.

I do strongly disagree with the ideas of some people, who have been brain-washed by the media and television, that any every break-up ends in tears, fights, hating your ex and never seeing them again.

IRL, the only time I see that happen is if both the parties are histrionic dramatics. If one party is douche, the drama is a usually reduced quite a bit. If it's situation like the one you described, the parties may no longer be friends, but it's quiet falling out rather than a big drama.

Exactly. I mostly see people who are perfectly amicable but still choose to keep their distance from each other after a break up. And break ups are most often the result of a combination of things, not someone reacting to a single event. Most things in life aren't as dramatic the movies show and a single catalyst is a very rare thing.
