Several years ago my dad and stepmom got me a cell phone. The problem with it wasn't that that I didn't want a phone (although I didn't), but that they didn't consult me on it at all and got me the phone because it was essentially free to them after a rebate, and then that was the end of it for them and I had to foot the monthly bill. Luckily it had no contract and so no one was getting stuck with cancellation fees when I just quit paying for it, but it was still like $40/month and I really could not afford the extra expense at the time.

It was also a weird, passive aggressive attempt by them to get me to have more responsibility and act more grown up, too. Since apparently you can't be a grown up without owning a cell phone? I have no idea. Nevermind that I was working two jobs and had other, more important bills to worry about at the time, but whatever. I never said anything, though, because I feel shitty whining about gifts. Unless it's years after the fact an anonymously on the Internet, apparently.

I know it's the thought that counts, but when someone just gets you something just to be passive aggressive or send some kind of message, that's kind of a shitty thought and I wish they just wouldn't bother.
