There is a difference between not being happy with the object you receive and being ungrateful for receiving a gift. I have no problem with people not liking their gifts, but that is not the attitude that's been in this thread.

Anything that is given with the sole purpose of jabbing, mocking, insulting - those are not gifts. I actually think you're being overly simplistic, but whatever.

Nobody's talking about things that are given maliciously. The issue is more about gifts that are about the giver instead of the recipient. Just because someone is taking the time and money to get you something doesn't mean they're thinking about YOU while they're doing it, and it doesn't mean you owe them something, including gratitude.
