This is really late, but... anon, I'm really glad your husband is doing well, BUT. My dad had hip surgery and also threw a clot that traveled to his lungs. He's not at all overweight and, although he had to stop exercising for a while due to his hip pain, is generally in decent shape. He's always eaten well.

I'm not saying weight is never a factor, but your anecdata is anecdata for a reason. These things happen for a number of reasons.

I read the comment you replied to as the husband's weight nearly caused him to die not because his weight caused the clot but because time was wasted to get him onto an operating table when the clot broke off.
