Whatever floats your boat, OP, but there are some characters you can't ship with yourself and like them.

Chuck Bass, I'm looking at you

If you mean that you can like him if you don't ship him with yourself, I'm right there with you. Then again, I never ship characters with myself.

That's an interesting method of putting yourself in someone else's shoes. Why do you want to learn to like them if you hate them?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
because it can detract from the overall enjoyment of a book series or show when the character you hate happens to be a main player with a lot of page/screen time.

Why wouldn't you want to learn to like a character you hate, if it's at all possible? What's the point of hating someone unless you honestly can't find anything good about them?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually rather adorable :)

You lead a sad lonely pathetic life. Why not just hate who you wanna hate? I actually think that's better in this case.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Because not everyone is a sad lonely pathetic individual who wants or needs to hate anyone.

I read that as "chavs"

and it took me a while to figure out that was an "I"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
haha, me too! saw it as "chavs" first, then realized it was "chars"

I like this idea - it's an interesting way to try to look at the character through a different lens. But I tend to play devil's advocate a lot of the time, too. I like to be able to at least try to see both sides of an issue. Or character in this case.

This is a cutely designed secret.

What if it leaks through to your real life and you start romantically pursuing the people you dislike?

I feel like if I tried that it would just make me hate them more. But good for you if it works for you! :D

sigh, I kinda don't like that thing where you have to express attraction to something in order to love and support it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Or even that you have to love/like a thing to understand it or treat it with the respect it deserves.
intrigueing: (no hard feelings point break)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-12-21 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I like your style, OP :) I don't ship myself with characters, but I really find it unpleasant when I hate characters that I'm supposed to like, and always try to find good things about them and to find ways to make myself like them or at least appreciate them. I guess shipping would be one way to do that.

Seriously, I don't get people who seem to actively enjoy stewing in hatred for a character and trying to find reasons for why a character sucks. If you can't overcome a character's bad traits to the point where you can like them, well, nothing wrong with that, but to actively try to find excuses to hate them and to ignore reasons to like them? That's really baffling. Why would anyone do that?

Huh. Me, I just try to write something from their perspective.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think if I tried to imagine dealing with them in person, I'd dislike them more.

Heh! So cute, but so much work! I just imagine them as cats.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
... I'm not sure the idea of romancing someone to make myself like them is one I'm really comfortable with. I mean, if it works for you, but ... isn't that a little cart-before-horse, at least?

Generally, I just try their POV for a while. Not necessarily to like them, but just to understand them. I tend to think you don't necessarily have to like someone, so long as you make an effort to understand where they're coming from and treat them with the respect they deserve. *shrugs*
