I do not like Rose. I found her unbearable and incredibly selfish. Everything was about her, her, her.

However.

I think she is the best companion after Donna. Not because she's a romantic interest or because she lasted a long time or because the Doctor couldn't get over her--all of this I didn't like. But because she had her own agency. She did independent things and her character was not defined by the Doctor (until later, that is). I also felt was more useful than a lot of his other companions.

I love Amy and Rory and Martha, but I feel like all of them just sort of wait around for the Doctor to do stuff. They lack initiative, particularly Amy.

So I appreciated Rose's dynamic. I just don't like her.

I wish more people who dislike Rose were like you. Valid reasons for not liking her personality but still appreciating the good qualities she had, instead of just 'OMG THE PRECIOUS DOCTOR CAN'T LOVE A ~HUMAN! SHE'S SO PLAIN! NOT PRETTY ENOUGH! NOT SMART ENOUGH! WAH WAH!'

They really give Who fans a bad name with their whinging.

Well, thinking a character isn't smart enough is a valid criticism, depending on the series. But Doctor Who sets a very high bar for "not smart enough"--not because of the Doctor, but because EVERYONE makes boneheaded stupid decisions in that show.

True. Still though, when even the man who's supposed to have more knowledge than God is making idiot mistakes, is ragging on the intelligence a cosmically inexperienced 19-yr old who never did uni really valid?

Nah, that's what I meant. Since everyone acts like an idiot, no one is. It takes an extra level of stupid in that show, I think. I love Doctor Who, but I wish the writers were a bit more creative about how to raise the stakes without making them behave like buffoons.

LOL so true. That's a lot of people's contention with Merlin as well.

You know, I'm not sure if we even watched the same show. Because while Rose can be somewhat selfish (and I think she's selfish in a healthy way - you can't let other people define your life) but... how can you say she's incredibly selfish? Like... I just don't understand.

Care to elaborate? :)
