Gone series by Michael Grant

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else read this? I adore it and can't work out why it isn't popular. (super powers! Sort-of-love-triangles! Ho Yay for the tumblr girls! Symbolism!)

I've got so many head-canons for this but the fandom is tiny and dead.

Ugh I need the final book like NOW.

Can anyone talk to me about this?

Oh god I think it's terrible. The first book had potential, but holy crap I did not care one iota for...Sam? I don't know. It was just loaded with a bunch of done themes and stories.

Really? I quite liked it because all the characters were genuinely flawed. And most of them did act like teenagers. I mean, how many times does a hero of that age say "Sorry. I'm 16. I don't know what I'm doing and I can't do this."

But to each their own. Sam isn't very interesting, I agree, I just really like the whole idea of the dome. (And tbh, I'm not a very empathic person, so having to care doesn't really register for me).

The premise is really interesting and has it's moments, I agree. And I actually liked a lot of the secondary characters more than Astrid and Sam. Uh...Lana(?), Emilio, Diana, Brianna...I think that was them? Anyway, I remember liking them in the first and second books quite a bit. I just couldn't stand the main characters.

Yeah, the last few books had more side character stuff, they were better.

Ugh. Astrid. Righteous religious people, can we not?

Sam and Astrid are both really bland, but I love all the side characters.
In the later books the POV character changes enough that Sam is no longer the most in focus protagonist, at least.

I read the first one soon after it released and found it really interesting, but I haven't picked up any of the others, so Idk if they remain that way? Dystopian YA series are very popular now, though. Maybe more people will start to read the series?

Yeah maybe, there have been on/off rumours about a film, but it's never gotten anywhere.

After Gone there's Hunger, Lies, Plague then Fear. The final one is Light.

Lies is pretty slow. I love Fear for spoilery reasons.

Funny thing is I'm not overly interested in what happens to the 'darkness' or the fighting- that's all inevitable, I want to see the kids coping after the dome comes down. Want to see if they can get used to normal life again. Grant has implied it'll be pretty hard, but I'm worried that he'll end the series before it gets to the part I'm really interested in.

Actually now that I look at it I'm a pretty bad fan.

I've read them all and found each to be awesome. Last book can just hurry on up and get here now please. Although I have no idea what a completely satisfying resolution to this series would play out like.

Yay!

I have no idea either. Like, getting outside will be such a huge clusterfuck of problems I kind of wonder whether or not the dome should stay up. At least they know what to expect from the FAYZ.

I LOVE Gone. I actually signed up for the fandom's secret santa, the only fandom participation I have ever done apart from occasionally posting fanart and reading the secrets here.
But the ending to Fear really bugged the shit out of me. I hate Astrid too much to stomach that.
If you PM me I would totally tal to you at great length about GONE

There's a secret santa? There's a fandom? (can you point me in the right direction?)

Yeah that was dull. I don't hate her exactly, it's just she's very self-righteous and religious and- okay she's supposed to be a genius but she can't figure out that what happened to Petey isn't her fault (also that he's probably not dead??). She talking to Cigar actually made me like her more.

Ugh, at times like this I wish I had a dreamwidth account.

Astrid is okay, her self-righteousness just makes me very angry. Astrid/Sam was being forced pretty hard by the author this book, too.
I hated the ending because it was so cheesy, though- it didn't conclude damn thing, either.

Nah man F!S is literally the only thing I use my account for. I usually comment on anon, too.

Yeah it's like, all this terrible, bizarre stuff is happening and Astrid's like. No. What would Jesus do.
What does that have to do with anything?! I was raised Catholic and I know there's a time and a place for religion. Government is not one of these places.

One of the reasons I tolerate Sam is that at least he's willing to get the job done. I respect him more for doing mercy kills and taking down the bad guys than I do Astrid for using her religion as an excuse for not doing anything.

Though there's tons of religious symbolism throughout the series. Sam being betrayed by a close friend, the importance of fishermen, Sam leading his people across the desert away from tyranny, an evil brother called Caine, the strange birth of the darkness (not virgin, but still not normal). Not to mention his surname is Temple.

One of my theory's is that Pete is going to 'possess' Sam (aka, make him his temple) and use their powers together to take down the Darkness. Petey's already god-like so I don't think it'd be a far stretch.

Astrid needs to get off her ass. She is the foremost female character in the series and is the only one who isn't badass. Dekka and Brianna are both awesome crazy action girls, but Astrid gets more screen time without actually doing anything.
And yeah, she pushes her religion into everything and on everyone she can.

Sam I actually like, despite his blandness. At least he's balanced- he's got flaws and strengths.

I love GONE's ridiculous amount of religious analogues and references to things that the younger readers wouldn't get. Like how Diana's namesake is the goddess of fertility or how Brian (Brianna) is the man that murdered Cain in Celtic mythology.

THAT WOULD BE GREAT. IT'S LIKE A BAD PUN
I'm just excited for the next book so They can take down that baby. Out of all the weird plot twists, a flaming alien baby has to be the weirdest. The ending was so rushed.

Re: Gone series by Michael Grant

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I wish she WAS actually a genius. Okay so maybe she can't fight but she could come up with clever plans or something. Instead she just messes up even worse than Sam then freaks out about Petey (who didn't even die. He just vanished. Why did she even assume he died? There wasn't a body) and goes and lives as a hermit.

Nice one. Really useful.

I thought he was bland up until the point where he did that speech where he said "I'm barely 16. I'm a kid. I can't do this" because...holy shit. There are so many medias with heroic teenagers we kind of forget that a normal kid wouldn't be able to act like Katniss or Harry Potter. I was impressed with his humanity, I guess.

OMG I DIDN'T REALISE THAT ABOUT BRIANNA THAT IS SO COOL.

I love bad puns!

Yeah I saw the baby coming but- it was still weird. Like, the Darkness is pretty depowered now. It was actually threatening before, now it's like. Lol. Alien baby.

The ending interested me because- like Grant has been saying- wtf are they going to do once the dome comes down? Like explain stuff about the Human Crew and the Darkness and mutations, with the government probably trying to cover stuff up and people wanting to know who died and how and. Just. Like I'm thinking he could get another whole book out of that. If he just ends it after they kill the Darkness and the dome comes down I'll be PISSED OFF. It's the people's reactions that I love reading about. Fear was my favourite because of that.

Astrid's smart but Sam is honestly much better at planning and strategy. He can just do it off the top of his head, too.
Sam's speeches are great, I love it when he borks them.
I love how realistic all the characters are, though- all these kids have these fantastic powers or are using physical force/deadly weapons and it's not some teenagers running around like an action movie, it's a bunch of teenagers traumatizing each other and seeing the consequences of their actions.

I'm really hoping that they show some of their stories after the dome is down, like therapy etc. Especially people like Dekka and Edilio, seeing how they have problems in their home lives. I want to see what happens to the kid with lazers in his arms and his brother, the kid who can pick up and throw cars with his mind, etc- like how the government handles them after they're out. what are they going to do with the dangerous ones?
