Quite easily, considering Cas doesn't come across as being that old in canon. None of the angels on SPN do. Even the archangels don't act as though they're billions of years old.

The only character on the show I find 'acts' as though he could have been around longer than a few thousand years is Death. But that's just my opinion.

I think the age thing is relative, too. I've always gotten the impression that, so far as angels go, Cas is young in the grand scheme of things. Or at the very least he's very inexperienced in certain things that aren't related to his original purpose, which was being a soldier. Still a hell of a lot older than Dean and Sam, but you have to take into account that different species with different aging (and vastly different life experiences) are going to have different maturity levels than humans.

The young in the scheme of things idea sort of got contradicted in 6.20, didn't it? In one of Cas' monologues? But I don't really remember much of S6.

Depends on how you look at it, I guess? There are mentions of things that acknowledge that he's extremely old in human terms ("Don't step on that fish", the Tower of Babel, etc), but I don't think it rules out him being young in comparison to some of the other angels. He's been around for a really, really long time and seen a lot, but I still get the impression that a lot of the angels have been around for longer. The whole "Don't step on that fish" scenario actually kind of reinforced that for me, since he had to be told its importance by another angel who was older and presumably wiser. The same goes for a lot of his interactions with some of the other angels, like Anna and Gabriel.

That being said, this is all a really subjective thing and I've seen good arguments to the contrary. My personal head canon is that he's relatively young angel-wise, though.
