Wait...what? People race!wank about Transformers now? Transformers? Really?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
of course! it's the internet and people are bored!! :D

I can think of way more fun ways to fill my time than race!wank, but to each her (or his) own, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
The weird thing is my first and initial reaction was to start arguing the fact that various groups and individuals WERE incredibly oppressed and abused, in several continuity streams. Hell, according to more than one the Decepticons waged their war because of it.

We just had a new kind introduced this week to the current stream, even.

True enough. I don't see fictional groups of robots (or people) being oppressed, or discussion thereof, as comparable to the issues surrounding real people's historical mistreatment, though, so I, personally, probably wouldn't call arguing about it (legitimately -or- in the frothy sjw way) race!wank.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It was more the "wait, but they have been oppressed...not for generations, because they don't HAVE generations, but millions of years."

However, given that SJWs have been known to argue that it's unconscionably offensive to write an oppressed alien race into a novel because it lessens the struggles of oppressed peoples on Earth (seriously. Seen it before), I doubt it would matter much.

What is that argument even? I've never heard that one before (sounds ridiculously twee, though).

Personally, and I say this as a person who is oppressed on multiple axes before any sjws we might have in the audience jump all over me, I think that writing about fictional oppression can, when done well, help people to understand, identify, and articulate injustice in the real world. It can get offensive, sure, if a person or work tries to carry the comparison too far or shoehorn into places where it doesn't fit, but any tool can be used badly. Just because I could use a hammer to nail up humiliating messages about someone all over their neighborhood doesn't mean a hammer is an inherently evil or oppressive tool.

On that note, I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been any wank about Roberts' calling the prejudice regarding whether a bot was forged or constructed 'apartheid'...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
There was, in some circles.

The same circles that say incredibly ridiculous, offensive and mind-boggling things about Chromedome and Rewind, and insult Roberts for portraying asexuality "wrong" (how the hell he can portray something wrong when he's writing -thoughtfully and intricately - about inorganic ALIENS I don't even know.)

And overlapping with the circles who lost their shit and said they were going to quit reading because of the Relinquishment Clinics.

Transformers fandom is a weird, WEIRD place.

Kind of glad those aren't the circles I run in....

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The good circles are very, very good. Welcoming and smart and generally awesome.

Alas, because balance is key in all things, the dark side exists, too. I keep running into it while trying to find more awesome. :(

*just read MTMtE, which I assume is what you're thinking of*

I'm not sure if it's a new kind, but rather a specific example of one we've known about for the majority of this continuity.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

There's been severe social stratification for a while. Bigotry and racism (regionism? altformism?) and all sorts of things.

Cassettes being slaves is definitely new, though.

It's new information, certainly, but like I said, I don't think I'd consider it a newly revealed form of prejudice and oppression, rather than more information on just how the oppressive alt-mode based caste system we already know about worked. Whenever there's a caste system, somebody's going to be at the bottom, and they're going to get a shit lot in life. Now we know who that was.

(It does explain why the Decepticon cassettes outnumber the Autobot ones by so much, and why Ratbat's new form was such a huge punishment, too.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Cybertron has become such a dark and brutal place at these folks hands. I'm glad I'm grown up, or I might be sad instead of "oooooh, shinyshiny depth...". Cassettes, not-by-choice-monoformers. Kind of makes me wonder whether the Circle of Light left before or after all this stuff, and whether they had any bots of either sort...

(Technically we haven't seen any Autobot cassettes in the traditional sense. As for Ratbat, I just took it as "you, who made laws for OTHERS, are now only able to reach your full potential at the hands of someone else". But, yes, that could be it. What I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall of Barber's email box.)

People race!wank about Transformers now?

There's actually quite a bit of that.

Mostly about the movie-verse (Jazz, again, the Twins), and some Japanese characterization (Apache, the Jointrons).

Also gender wank.

*shrug* Learn something new every day.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
The live-action movie was a whole different beast. It deserves much of its wank, if you ask me. The cartoon? Not so much. Parts of the many, many comics? Sometimes.

The genderwank is somewhat perplexing. Never actually been able to parse that to anything remotely resembling sense.
