Newer games are actually much easier than retro ones, for a variety of reasons (part of it being just that software limitations at the time meant games HAD to be harder, although I think a change in the gaming audience is also a partial cause). There are a TON of people that haven't beaten Super Mario Brothers, for example, even people who have been gaming for a long time.

I've only played parts of the first game, but I think you'd have an OK time with it, OP. Newer games have a lot of tutorials in the beginning to make sure you get the basics of the game, and Assassin's Creed is one of the games that does this. The game can still be tense, since part of the goal is not to get caught, but even if you get caught the checkpoints are pretty forgiving and the game does its best to teach you how to play it as you go.
