There's a big difference between someone saying a character lacks depth and simply saying they don't care for a character. Yes Dory was comic relief but there was more to her character than just that. You want to see a character that is simply there for sheer comic relief? See the raccoon and hummingbird from Pocahontas or the army men from Mulan. Those are characters that were not developed and only there for laughs and someone the main character could interact with.
