I am not a gamer, I suck at FPS games, and I don't own a console, but I played the first AC on my PC, and when the third one came out, my boyfriend bought it for his XBox.

So, as someone who came into it more or less blind, there's a bit of a learning curve for the controls, but it's not insurmountable. The tutorial mode is long (about an hour and a half, but it's also story), the game auto-saves pretty frequently so you don't constantly have to re-do large swaths of gameplay, and you can play through the story without doing all the optional objectives. You'll still get the benefit of the gorgeous graphics, and you can decide for yourself later what optional things you want to do.

I did all the collections, and all the naval missions, and hunted A LOT.

With everything that I did, I didn't need my boyfriend to help me with anything beyond telling me where stuff was and how to get there. So if a total novice like me can figure out the controls and do all the stuff, so can you! Go for it!
