As a writer, I actually completely agree with this and do not think it is an overreaction at all. If you are willing to put the necessary time, effort, and (when applicable) research into something, personal experience is NOT necessary.

I understand that many writers stick to "what they know", but as a writer who enjoys the challenge of researching and writing on complex topics I find fascinating but do not have experience with, basically being told you can't write about something in a convincing way just because you do not have the personal experience to support it gets VERY tiring. -_- For example, do you really think the author of American Psycho is a serial killer? Has anyone who writes about time travel experienced that? Do paranormal fantasy authors know what it's like to be an immortal vampire? No, but they frequently manage to do it very convincingly! I'm sorry, but not having personal experience with something is not an iron barrier against addressing it in your fiction.
