Never thought of his religious background before but, hey, why couldn't he be Jewish?

I wasn't aware that having a headcanon of a character being an ethnic minority was the same as fetishizing that minority. I think that level of paranoia about SJWs is kind of ridiculous. Write Coulson as a Jewish guy if you want to. He's still Coulson either way.

I don't see him as Jewish (I just realized I see him as Protestant for some weird reason), but to each their own. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I wrote a fic where Cap was Catholic and the SJWs didn't rain hellfire down on me. Though I am Catholic myself, so maybe that doesn't set off their alarm bells? Headcanon is fun because it's your own interpretation, so if it's your headcanon that Coulson is Jewish, that's perfectly fine.

I've actually seen quite a few fics that share the whole Steve-as-catholic head canon! It's not always explicit, but I think a lot of people tend to write him that way because of his parents and being raised in an orphanage. I like the idea, personally.

There's no reason or basis for him being Christian or Buddhist or whatever else. He's a fictional character and his religious affiliation is unknown. Feel free to consider him whatever you want.

Generally speaking the face and the name don't look all that Jewish to me. Well, at all. But I then again I have met enough Jews who you wouldn't realize were Jewish without being told so that I can tell you it's perfectly possible with Coulson.

(Just gonna add I am Jewish myself here.)

also I never understood why saying you thought an awesome character was some religion/ethnicity not specifically referenced in canon would be offensive. maybe if it was a terrible character that everyone hated but no one hates Coulson

For whatever reason, if a character is a blond All-American type, my guy automatically assumes they're Jewish until canon says otherwise. So Coulson, not so much. Movie!Captain America? Yep. No real reason why, just does.

I do that for a lot of characters--just decide that they're religion/sexuality/ethnicity/etc. with no real backing for it in canon. I don't see it as an issue.

Nothing wrong with thinking he's Jewish. I think it would cross a line where you wrote a story full of Jewish stereotypes.

TBH, if it isn't part of canon, I really don't think about the religion of a character. But then again, I'm not particularly religious, so it doesn't seep into things I watch/read/listen to.
