Terms that come up often that you don't understand

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's the phrase "id fic." I don't know if it's fandom specific or not, but I've asked and never received an answer for what it actually is.

So...any ideas? Any confusing terms? Let's get those things defined. :)

http://fanlore.org/wiki/Idfic - basically fic that satisfies a sexual or emotional kink - usually I see it in reference to emotional kinks, like woobie fic

Ever seen an author who writes the same thing over and over? So much so that eventually you feel like you're staring straight into their soul?

Basically it's a story that is written because the author fucking loves that shit.

See Mercedes Lackey for a published equivalent.

really? i guess I didn't notice, offhand I can think of Kethry(sp?) and...maybe that guy in the Last Herald Mage. She does seem to have a few orphans, but since it's fantasy I figure it's a go. Is it actually id fic or just a trope she uses?

IDK about that. Only thing I know about her is that she seems like a genuinely decent person in real life, if I remember correctly. Volunteers at a lot of animal rescue stuff.

She uses it a ton, and it tends to feel like id rather than trope to me. The Elf car books are where it came through the strongest, but Talia, Skip, that fire-mage herald, half-cat girl, the owl series guy, that new one (Mag?) all featured in the Herald series.

On the balance, I'd say that about half her MCs have abusive childhoods.

Man, I am that author in my fic. No shame here.

It's basically fic that plays into or somehow satisfies the author's kinks, emotional or otherwise. A lot of it gets slammed for being badly written or too self-indulgent or what have you, but like anything it can be both good and bad. You see a lot of it on kink memes, both in what people choose to fill, and in just reading through prompts.

I actually love the term idfic!

Beyond what people said above, for me it can also be that uncomfortable feeling when you realise how much of the author's psychosexual life you are seeing through their writing. See: waaaay too much of Piers Anthony thanks.

I just like the acknowledgement that we have all different kinds of reasons for liking things, and sometimes those reasons are kind of personal and strange.

I don't know exactly what it means. But the id is one's unrestrained impulses, so I always thought it was fic where the author is just selfishly writing something s/he wants, often something exaggerated or something controversial.

My OTP is violent and often considered creepy; I usually take care to explain how the dynamic and the consent work in some way. When I'm just writing them beating one another to all hell and fucking delightedly in the aftermath, I call that idfic -- I'm not bothering to explain, apologize, or try to draw the reader into their psyches, I'm just wallowing in all the gloriously dark and twisted stuff that gets me off.
