I think it would be cool if they did switch it up and did an A:TLA sort of thing, but then you'd run into problems with people bitching because a) OMG IT'S A EUROPEAN FOLK TALE WHY AREN'T THEY EUROPEAN?! (nevermind non-white Europeans have been around for awhile) and b) but why do they have to use a narrative that was originally about ~white people~ in a movie about poc? But then if they used a narrative from another culture, there would be cries of doing it wrong and cultural appropriation and what-not.

Still, since people are going to bitch regardless of what they do, I say they may as well step out on a limb and take some chances. Nothing against blonde princesses, but we have a ton of those already. Changing things up wouldn't hurt anything.

It might hurt profits. Money will always triumph over social justice. The dollar is god. And the dollar don't care.

And if one SJW didn't like the movie for A-b-c reasons, you'll sure they're going to tell people to DO NOT WATCH IT for a-b-c reasons. And since almost the SJW think a-like...

Who gives a fuck? They are a fringe group. There aren't as many as the internet would have you believe (and a bunch of them sock puppet)

Oh, they might dominate your favorite fandom blog... but they aren't enough to make or break ticket sales. I promise you those people aren't so large a group they can make or break this movie on that platform alone. If it's a good movie, or hell, even a mediocre one, it'll do just fine like most every other Disney movie has since forever.

BESIDES YOU GOT SHEZOW. HOW MUCH MORE PROGRESS DO YOU WANT FROM DISNEY?!?!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
true that.

(i'm streaming it right now, see 2nd page)

Sadly they are enough to sometimes push celebrities off of blogging, and social media sites. I hate that. I'd rather argue with someone who stands by what they say, than some sniveling white apologist.

Not to mention them screaming and bitching over any real POCs (I hate the term but I'll use it here) who dare to have a different opinion, be an individual, or not be as angry as they think we ought to be.

I can't say, much as I'd like to, that they have no effect. But they aren't going to bury this movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they don't all think alike. That is part of the problem. It is impossible to please them all at once.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
This is very true, as much as I'd like it not to be. I do think that sometimes they (and Hollywood in general, really) use the whole hurting profits thing as a shield to hide behind because they don't want to bother with trying new things or trying to shake things up, but at the end of the day they are a business.

There was a lesson to be learned from the bullshit whining that the P.C. crowd aimed at "Princess and the Frog". Long story short, a movie with only white characters will get complaints that there are only white characters. A movie with non-whites will receive all manner of paranoid, victim-complex scrutiny about latent racism.

Hey, couldn't Disney potentially make more money by making the lead a brunette? More dolls for brown-haired white girls! The market won't be saturated by blondes anymore!

[personal profile] iggy 2012-12-23 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Lol there are actually a lot more dark haired princesses than blonde princesses though.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I looked it up, and out of the white Disney princesses, there are three blondes, two redheads, one brunette, and one with black hair. (All of the non-white princesses have black hair.) Anna would be the fourth blonde one.

Six have dark hair then. Two blondes though actually. Cinderella's not blonde. Disney's just changed her hair color in a lot of merchandise because they're lazy I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Cinderella is blonde. A dark/dirty blonde, but still blonde.

I disagree?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
... that looks pretty blonde to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
...That's a copper tone of red hair, you nitwit.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, it still looks blonde to me. Also if you look at other screencaps from the movie, it varies in shades, but in many of them it looks to be a dirty blonde.

In the night scenes, she definitely looks like a blonde.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Neither of the redheads have "dark" hair, and the original poster advertising the Disney Cinderella film clearly featured her as blonde. And, uh...where did you get 6 from? If you counted Cinderella and all of the other non-blonde white princesses, that would just be 5, but if you counted all of the non-blonde princesses + Cinderella, that would be 9.

Did...did you even notice that the original post was a joke?

Six have dark hair- Pocahontas, Jasmine, Mulan, Snow White, Tiana, Belle.

(I wasn't exactly deathly serious with my original reply...)

Well, look what you've gone and done. Look what you've gone and done.
