Yeah, the only topic I get squoggly about when people who have never seen Old Who try to make definitive statements about Who in general is a) companions and b) regeneration. No, not all regenerations were like Nine->Ten, so when you're baffled at how Ten became Eleven...the backlash-style regeneration has about three or four past examples as precedent. And no, not all companions fit the mold of Rose, Martha, Donna, or Amy. In fact, very few of them did. And only some of them were from the present. Or regular people looking for adventure.

Yep, that's exactly what bugs me (squoggly is an awesome way to describe it!) - the definitive statements. I don't mind people finding things exciting or painful or what have you - but it's just not right to describe it as 'the most painful thing ever' or 'the darkest thing the doctor has ever done' - if you've not seen Old Who.

I remember lots of reaction re: what Eleven did to Amy in The God Complex - making her lose her faith in him as a way to kill the Minotaur thing. There were lots of declarative statements about that scene.

And I just wanted to point people to The Curse of Fenric, because that wasn't the first time the Doctor has had to completely mess with a Companion's faith in him! (I thought his manipulation of Ace was much more harsh, as well.)

I hated the scene in the God Complex simply because it was complete nonsense character-wise -- Amy hadn't had some ~deep faith~ in the Doctor or hero-worshipped him since Amy's Choice, and was probably the nu!companion who was the least in awe of him out of them all, excepting Rory -- but even as someone who has only watched a handful of Classic serials, IA that the reasoning for a lot of "why this scene was SUCH A BIG DEAL" stuff that nu!fans come up with is really facepalmingly ignorant when you think back to the stuff he's had to do during the classic era. Even before I had seen any of classic Who, I was always going "uhhh...are you sure about that?" when another fan made big sweeping declarations.

And...it's okay to be ignorant of the classic era if you don't watch it, but at least be aware that you're missing of a lot of canon evidence for a lot of things if you don't.
