I guess i don't get what 'comfort food' is. Is it food you eat when you're unhappy? When you're homesick? When you feel bad (ill)?

And how does that *help*? I'm baffled.

Maybe it's because i hate cooking so much.

I hate cooking too, which is why my comfort food is usually Chinese or Vietnamese takeout. :]

If I don't have any money I usually cook up some rice, top it up with a fried egg, bbq/sweet chili sauce, s&p, and sesame oil. ~Skillzzz

Maybe if we had decent carry-out here i'd have a comfort food. We only have pizza delivery, blech.

Cooking is bad enough - having to *make food* on top of being bummed out is really just torture. :)

Comfort food is that stuff you munch on when you're feeling bad for whatever reason.

For some people it's what you raid in the fridge when you're feeling depressed and want to curl up on the sofa and watch junk, for others it's a meal your mother used to cook that you can eat and escape into your memories for a time, sometimes it overlaps with the chicken soup/lemon and honey/whatever your preferred sickness food is.

Also, I meant to add that it can help because

1) It's chocolate and so actually does make you feel better
2) It's indulgent and so makes you feel like you've spent some time on yourself
3) It evokes memories that are comforting
4) It is good for an unsettled stomach/contains spices that clear sinuses/etc.
5) Other

4. I do know this - when i'm sick, i don't eat. I can barely force myself to drink. I always know i'm feeling *better* when i start craving ice water. A lifetime of a touchy stomach sort of precludes food when it's unhappy.

I can see that, it sounds tough.

There are foods that are good for heavy colds as well etc. that some people class as "comfort food". Foods strong in lemon and honey, or ginger, often fall into this catagory

Huh. I guess...i don't really eat when i'm bummed. Being bummed is bad enough, now i have to *cook*? No way.

I'm not much of a cook when I'm down myself, which is why my comfort food is the veggie hotdogs/pasta thing mentioned elsewhere in this thread (It requires one pan of water and a timer, you simply add things at the right time, serve and eat). I know there are some people who will cook because they want the pay-off, and some who won't because they dislike the process too much.

For a lot of people comfort food is simply raiding the fridge/cupboard.

Even that amount of prep/cook is too much sometimes. Yeah, i *really* hate cooking. Spoonful of peanut butter/glass of juice, ftw!

I didn't even think you had to eat comfort food when you're feeling bad for it to even count as comfort food. I just sometimes get a hankering for foods that just feel. Comfy.

Oh god I'm actually just a gluttonous pig D:>

I'd count food you don't make yourself though. Like delivery pizza, or chips, or cafe chocolate drinks.

Hehe. Nah. I have hated cooking for pretty much ever, and have got to the point where i'd rather eat cheese and crackers for every meal than even look at the stove.

Plus - small town, only delivery is commercial pizza (blech) and up until last year, i *couldn't* eat a lot of things due to Crohns.

So food doesn't rate high on my list of 'stuff that makes me feel better'.
