Bronies documentary

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Did you know that a documentary about Bronies is coming out?

The trailer is baffling. Basically, they seem to paint the Brony fandom as a real-life extension of My Little Pony's friendship philosophy. Really.

Urgh I hate the attention fandom has been getting in the recent years. Does no-one respect the Fourth Wall anymore?

Acknowledging a fandom isn't technically breaking the fourth wall, unless it involves characters or the show's canon itself acknowledging the existence of an audience/fanbase. What you're looking for is distance between creators and their fanbase.

So is this a real documentary or a "documentary" a bunch of fans have put together?

The former could be interesting, the latter will be embarassing at minimum and, well, victim blaming misogynistic shit at maximum. Second hand embarrassment and I'm not even a fan.

It looks like a budget version of the latter and I do not like or care for the latter

Real, but funded by Kickstarter. A bit of both, then.

wow. I looked up the amount of money they put into it and, what a waste of the extra money. For that amount of money I'd expect the trailer to look a little bit more professional with some decent pacing. It doesn't imply good things about the actual meat of the film. The air I got from it was "artsy shots and big dramatic moments" with most of the money going towards getting to the locations.

This is very :S for me.

Think of all the things they could have kickstarted. Like wells in places that need clean water.

Yeah well...you could say that about the homestuck kickstarter too, particularly since they went *really* overboard with extra cash.

Hussie earned that money. He made the fans cry. And everybody knows the fans of homestuck are horrible.

Who else would give you EVERY SHIP?! and then destroy EVERY SHIP!?

Only the walking god that is Andrew.

I have no idea! Supposedly it's already done and was screened somewhere with invitations, but I've been unable to find the official release date to the public.

I'm dying to see just how much the documentary covers.

A documentary about bronies could be really, really interesting as long as it wasn't done by fans, and as long as the people doing it didn't buy the self-representation of the bronies. It would be a fascinating phenomenon to view but to really get at it you would have to have that distance from and that perspective about the material. From reading things like the Kickstarter etc, it really sounds like they're not doing that, and that's a damn shame, because it could be something really good if it was done right.

I think I visited the Kickstarter page for this about once or twice. I'm actually kinda curious on how it goes out once it's finished, but just in case... *prepares hypocritical flame bomb*
