You know - I can understand that. I think part of what makes New Who relatable is the companions/characters - and if you can't find a way to connect with them, it'd be tough to watch the older stuff. There are definitely some series that I have trouble watching (and some companions *coughPericough* that annoy the crap out of me). Though I think that some of the particular Doctor/Companion combinations you've mentioned were some of the best - including all the current incarnations. (Four was the current Doctor when I started watching, but Seven is 'MY' Doctor).

Ehhh...maybe I am a little bit too *hey you kids get off my lawn* about it. I got a bit too 'don't be put off by what it looks like!' - when obviously you weren't and have given it a fair shake. So, ignore my grumbling.

Oh gods... Happiness Patrol! Yeah, that's one of those episodes that defies description and logic to begin with! But, I rewatch it anyway because I will always have the deepest affection for Sylvester McCoy singing a snippet of 'As Time Goes By'.
