Doing everything for a boy

Yup, sounds totally progressive because she's ALLOWED to be epic for a boy

Hey, that's the plot of the original story. And it's got less to do with that he's a boy and more to do with that he's a friend. Hell, the original hints pretty strongly at her being romantically involved with the Robber Princess, far more than she is with the male character (who's not even in the story for more than the start--establishing that he gets messed up by the goblin's mirror--and the finish--when she brings him home from being the Snow Queen's prisoner). Honestly, it could've been the exact same story if Kay was a Katie, and it's really got nothing to do with being progressive or not.

NAYRT - Basically this. One of my favorite things about the original was that everything Gerda did was for friendship. There was love there, but it was described as a brotherly/sisterly kind of love more than a straight-up romance. Plus, like you said, Kay wasn't even there for most of the story and it was basically Gerda doing Epic Shit to save him and meeting awesome people (like the Robber Princess) along the way.

I also don't get why a girl saving a boy - who is a very dear friend - would be a bad thing. We've got plenty of stories about girls being saved by boys. And I honestly wouldn't mind the switch up that she's out to save her own heart, either, if it weren't for the "and we'll give her a dude to follow on her quest because... well obviously there needs to be a dude there! And maybe love interest!"
