From this interview:
You really do torment poor, lovesick Daniel Brühl in this movie. Did you continue to off-screen?
"It was a strange relationship, actually. We had real fun in Paris when he came to read the lines with me during casting. I know he said to Quentin, "It's her." So I have to say thanks to Daniel for that. There was this chemistry between us immediately, but after that we had these little fights -- but cute fights! Like, "You're so French!" Or, "You're so German." We were like little children, fighting over these very stupid things. Then we had this moment at that festival in Capri [last December] where we finally discovered each other and had fun and said, "OK, let's make peace." But even without those little stupid stories, every time I was so glad to have a scene with him, because he's so professional and very, very generous. When he's off camera [during another actor's close-up], he's still "here," performing a scene for you. So we had a lot of fun together."
Roughly translated from a French interview in Blast magazine, from May 2009.:
Q. You met good people?
A. Yes, Daniel Brühl, great actor, even off camera, it's very easy to shoot with him. In addition, he could co-produce my film for the studio in part with his company in Germany.
Q. Let's talk about your film, if you will… It is already in production?
A. Yes, with Alain Attal, productions of the Treasury. It is well advanced, we want the same things, we thought of big studios elsewhere, so I talked with Daniel Brühl about his production company in Germany. This will be a realistic film with very poetic transitions.
The film she was talking about was her big directorial debut, Les adoptés. Daniel has a production company and they were going to work together on producing her film, but she had financing issues which pushed production back. When she was ready to get things rolling, Daniel's father died and he became a bit of a hermit (understandably so), which halted their plans. But, she got things in order and got it done without him.
Another mention of their audition from this interview:
"And Daniel Bruhl came to Paris, and it was just working with him, like one hour and a half. And it’s just amazing."
Then there's this from Quentin Tarantino:
"Frankly she reminded of Shosanna and Shosanna has been a character that I've really cared about for a long time, I've had her in my mind for a long time so I was very precious about who played her, it had to be the right fit. When I met with Melanie, Daniel (Bruhl) had already been cast so we auditioned them together and it was like old movie star magic time. I was like 'God, if this was like a movie in the Forties, Daniel and Melanie would be the ones to play these characters..' It had almost like a cool old Hollywood glamour about them playing it. Melanie and I went out and had dinner and I realised that it would be a wonderful collaboration between the two of us."
And according to Daniel, Quentin would watch them while filming their scenes together and giggle (Daniel worried that all the giggling would ruin the scenes, but he found it was all later edited out).
They were also cute together at the Berlin premiere of IB. They stood close together, while he had his hand on her back and she leaned into him a lot while everyone else just stood around awkwardly.
Idk, they'd just be so good in something else together. I demand more films with attractive Europeans being attractive with each other!
