Suicide... 'Victim'?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
In case the title is lost since there are a lot of threads posted: Suicide "Victims" is the discussion here. Well, not discussion so much as question about phrasing.

See, the term victim confuses me on the best days and pisses me off on the bad days (Usually after I've seen my aunt, whose son killed himself a couple years ago: to be clear, she's not using the term. I'd never objecting to her calling it how she chooses. The anger comes because *she* is the victim, not him) because it refers to the person who killed themselves.

Now the suicidal person was a victim, yes. A victim of depression that led to suicide, or bullying which led to suicide, or suicidal thoughts which... you get my point. But ultimately taking your life was an entirely personal choice. A choice I personally understand, but... still a choice and not an only choice.

So... I get the intent behind the wording, but not the actual wording. Why "suicide *victims*" when you can't be a victim of your own direct, intended action? Opinions welcome.

You answered yourself in the third paragraph.
