It depends on where you are. Technically, Eskimo is a term that encompasses both the Yup'ik and Inupiat peoples, whereas Inuit only applies to the Inupiat. Inuit is the more accepted term in Canada and Greenland, since the people who would fall under the term in those countries are Inupiat; Eskimo is also considered somewhat pejorative in both countries. Eskimo, on the other hand, is more commonly used in Alaska, since it's the preferred term of many Yup'ik people, and the Yup'ik are indigenous to Alaska. It's a pretty complicated issue overall.
