-sighs- You sound like one of those 'Wolves are truly noble beasts that are totally better than humans!' people, tbh.

That said, I agree they sometimes get the short end of the stick but you might want to remember that, for a long time, the wolf was used as a symbol* of whatever big bad the story/fable/whatever was actually about, kind of like a fox was used as a symbol for a thief a lot of the time. It also doesn't help that for a long time wolves actually were a danger to humans, and not just by attacking us - they also had a habit of killing off livestock which could make a family starve as well.

tl;dr: Wolves are a long engraved symbol of 'Big Bad' in western culture so...you're both fighting an uphill battle, and [in some ways] demanding that a culture change it's symbolism

*either because they weren't actual people, or because talking like that about the actual people wasn't exactly the smartest move

Wolves don't think enough like humans to be bad in a human sense. And for some reason, the kind of simplicity and single-mindedness you find in a social predator frequently comes off as nobility.

Human ideals are effed up.

I wasn't arguing that they were bad in a human sense - I was pointing out that they're pretty much engraved in western culture as symbols of the Big Bad - not quite the same as being the Big Bad. [Also, that they were for a fairly long time in history an actual danger to humans in multiple ways, which helped engrave that].

I also think it's worth noting that wolves have a lot of POSITIVE symbolism in modern culture too.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
True, they do! I was just focusing on the bad since that's probably why they get represented that way a lot in media - though I probably should have mentioned the positive too, sorry.

Team Jacob ;)

That's not symbolism - that's just lust.

That wasn't a wolf. That wasn't even a good werewolf.

And he's a pedophile form a clan that beats you if you don't see what a nice guy they are. Not a good role model.
