so Sword Art Online is finally over, and I watched every episode of that misogynistic crap because I was incessantly amazed by how each episode was worse than the previous one in terms of DNW.

But all I see around me is love for this garbage and Gary Kirito Godmod Stu and his waifu. Am I the only one who thought it was absolute tripe? Do my friends just have horrible taste in anime?

One of my pet peeves (out of many): how basically all the characters ignored the fact that the guy who coded the game was a mass murderer, and went on about his castles in the sand or someshit. I would never trust any bit of code that guy wrote ever again, personally.

But you can watch Asuna cooking for Kirito! There are several episodes about that.

I'm only up to episode 16 so far, but yeah, I've gotten the sense it's going downhill now. Especially with the introduction of the incestuous sister-cousin, and Asuna's horrible creeptastic suitor.

Still, I'll keep watching, because the only other series I know about online games is .hack//whatever, and that's been digging its own grave for years.

I have a (male) friend (generally a decent person who doesn't spend much time in online fandom at ALL) who loves SAO and says I should watch it etc.

Some more points to raise - Asuna has no agency whatsoever. Her greatest contribution to the story is making bento lunches for Kirito. She does not actually make a single proper decision for herself the entire time.

To the point where you have Kirito fighting other people over her right to go off campaigning, while she hides behind him.

The second arc features a villian who repeatedly sexually molests her (while keeping her in a golden cage), and threatens rape. He finally starts to implement it when he has Kirito there, watching. The helpless Kirito wails, "Is this my punishment?"

There's also some molestation by tentacle monsters, a whole incestuous romantic subplot with his underage sister whose boobs are repeatedly fanservice'd up for the camera, and a whole harem full of girls (read: every girl in the series) who just can't keep their hands off Kirito. Who has episodes deveoted to his rescue of each and every one of them.

Does the show take a sudden turn halfway through? Because I watched that far and I'm planning to finish the rest over winter break, and I basically have no idea what you're talking about.

What does it do that is so misogynistic? I'd seen it around on tumblr and LJ and it seemed pretty innocuous, but suddenly everyone's raging against it. I'm just curious.

From what I know, a new arc opened with the main female lead (Asuna) still in a coma, mentally trapped in a new online game (ALO). An evil businessman is gearing to marry her and thus control her family's fortune, so it's up to the main male lead (Kirito) to log into ALO and rescue Asuna's avatar. Kirito starts off incredibly over-powered, and manages to get through the game almost entirely on his own while making otherwise-strong female characters (including his own step-sister) fall in love with him. Asuna can't do anything but wait for Kirito, since the one time she tried to escape, she was molested by the octopus-like avatars of some of the game programmers.

Well, there's the fact that Asuna has NO agency. None. From the moment she's with Kirito, she actually does not make a single decision on her own. There's a scene when she wants to go off with Kirito to fight for a few days, and her guild (which she's the vice-commander of) won't let her. Only if Kirito fights them and wins will he be allowed to take her away.
Asuna accepts this, yes?

Despite the fact that Asuna is supposedly a strong fighter, much more is made of her RAD COOKING SKILLS. Seriously, like three episodes are devoted to her cooking for Kirito. It's so precious.

And then in the second arc the main villian repeatedly threatens our Innocent Virgin with rape. He's finally on the way to proper sexual molestation - in front of Kirito, of course, because otherwise it would have no meaning. Watching helplessly, Kirito cries, in heartfelt pain, "IS THIS MY PUNISHMENT???"

That last part really bothers me a lot. Way to make an intended RAPE still all about the main male character. Gross.

I gave up on it around episode nine, which is saying something about how much I hated the show because usually if I make it past the first five or six episodes of a series I finish it (heck, I finished Guilty Crown and that was a trainwreck of terrible by the end). Kirito just bored the heck out of me. I liked Asuna at first, but every episode her character arc got more and more disappointing. From everything I've heard since, I made the right choice dropping that show.

Kirito is the godmod to end all godmods. Later on we find out that the creator of the game himself granted Kirito a Special Skill, because he thought Kirito was just that damn talented.

In the second half of the series they go into another game, and all of Kirito's super stats get transferred, ensuring our pwecious Hero doesn't have to go through all that n00b grinding crap and is 10X stronger than everybody else from the get-go.

And Asuna gets to be sexually molested the entire time. You made a wise choice, leaving this trainwreck.
