Just complainin'

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear my, I keep falling in love with fandoms that do not exist.

I thought Murder Rooms would be the worst, but now I'm into Closing Time.

Closing bloody Time.

So I'm sitting here in my cold and draughty fandom corner reading Avengers and HP fanfiction, and I feel so lonely and abandoned. I didn't even make it to this year's Yuletide.

For some reason I find the popular stuff moderately boring. No, I do enjoy it - The Avengers, HP, Skyfall, TDKR, whatever - but I feel like there's no really complicated chemistry, the plots are simple, the relatioships are simple, the jokes make me smile... not laugh. I would like to get into something popular, but I seem to be utterly unable to.

AUUUUGHYYY.

-pats- I know what you mean, nonny. I keep falling in love with fandoms for books and, 9/10 times the fandom doesn't exist. It's a little disheartening, isn't it?

It sure as hell is :( The last surprise that awaited me was the absence of any normal fandom for Catch-22. For some reason I was sure it would have a number of active fans. After all, it is American classics, and, as far as I know, just about every US teenager is obliged to know what it is.

Yet there was almost nothing.

(they even made a movie out of it, albeit a horrible one)

Thanks for pats, though) What are yours?

In my neck of the woods most people don't find out about Catch-22 until they're in their late teens - early 20's, so maybe that has something to do with it? But it is an amazing book! It got me through some very hard times a while back.

[I can't say I've seen the movie, but why do you say it's horrible?]

The most current one is the Elemental Masters series by Mercedes Lackey. It's set during WW1 England, and it's got an amazing magic system. Plus the fact that she actually does have a pretty good sized fandom for one of her other series and I just through there'd be more cross-over than there actually is it seems.

But isn't it in the school curriculum in the US?.. Aww, that's awesome and I'm smiling. Not sure what was prevalent in my feelings about it - depression or happiness - but I see how Yossarian's and Orr's escapes could cheer one up. The fates of Doc Daneeka, Kid Sampson, McWatt and Snowden upset me so much that I didn't even expect the thing to end well, I thought it would be just complete and eternal darkness. And then there I was, grinning in amazement through the tears.

The movie? ...oh, it was just fucked up. They mixed Ferrara with the mission of that tiny nameless village, left Bologna out (!), then all of a sudden Hungry Joe was chopped in two instead of Sampson, which was comepletely senseless, because both Joe and McWatt appeared just for a couple of moments only to get killed right away. And Doc Daneeka lost his good half. All of it.
Orr was handsome.
Yossarian was probably the best part of the entire story. But the last scene had him escaping in the open sea on a yellow raft x_x

Googled the Elemental Masters. I think I love the idea of it being based on fairy tales. Thank you for the rec.

That depends entirely on the state - and even then it can vary from school district to school district. So...some parts yes, some parts no?

For me it was just seeing other people going through rough times too mostly. ^^; I'd just found out that my grandmother had cancer, and a pretty high chance of dying so...yeah. But whatever works, right?

I'd imagine they'd make Orr handsome, particularly if it was done by a studio but...@_@ Wow. That's...some interesting changes, to put it nicely.

Np, I hope you enjoy it!

Murder Rooms <3

As the sole member of a fandom for a book series, I just kind of assume I'm not very good at this whole fandom thing in general. I fell pretty hard for Skyfall, but of course I walked out of the cinema shipping every pairing imaginable but Bond/Q and then got home to find that was the dominant pairing by far *head!desk*

Murder Rooms? There's a fandom, however small, for Murder Rooms?

*runs to AO3*

There's me. Plus one smutty one shot and one story with a non-sexual spanking kink. But yes, you can count that as fandom, although I'm the only one active.

I can really identify with your last paragraph. There have been so many things I loved but that sparked absolutely zero interest in me to find out what other fans thought or to follow up by reading/writing fic, etc. (For me, popularity doesn't seem to matter in this regard.)

Anyway... I liked Murder Rooms too. :)
