You can definitely have the gold (or rather, this puppy icon, because I don't have any gold medals sitting around). I'm irl LOL right now, and I fear my neighbors are going to start pounding on the door to make sure I'm not dying in here. (Damned thin apartment walls.)

How does that even work?? I don't know much about the whole "multiple" thing and how legit it actually is, but...

That could create some really awkward situations...and you could use the "multiple" ruse to troll the fuck out of people. I'd be willing to bet people have.

I swear I've seen it done before! I don't remember many specifics. Just that it was... Er, a convenient excuse for having lots of sockpuppets.

Yeah, some people do use it to troll the fuck out of people. It's incredibly annoying.

And it definitely creates some awkward situations. Though in my experience, online it's more the "coming off as a fucking flake" kind of awkward than anything else. (Multiple members of a single system all hanging 'round the same online terrain isn't a definite sign of a faker, but it's pretty high on the checklist.) IRL can get weirder, since it requires operating in a much more confined space.

Basically, it's the same thing as little kids having imaginary friends, only they are little kids with imaginary friends who have the internet as their playground and platform. Just look at the overly speshul and ~deep~ names and backgrounds they give their headmates. It's like having your very own army of Mary-Sues in your head.
Some are downright trolls. There are quite a few tumblr otherkin/multipple system trolls - not always easy to spot because the 'real' ones are almost more over the top than the trolls.
