Strange family traits that have skipped you

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-12-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)

Last Wednesday my nephew swallowed a penny. (Here is his x-ray with Lincoln at his throat. Don't worry. It's out and he's back to being his never ending ball of energy five year old self.) Thing is, when his mother, my sister, was his age, she swallowed a quarter. Apparently, swallowing money is a family trait that has skipped me.

So, what weird family traits does your kin have and have they skipped you? And are you grateful that they have?

My Grandpa, Dad and I have all received the same despairing line in our school reports:

"Doesn't suffer fools gladly", along with a request to be kinder to those who don't work or talk as fast as us.

Looks like impatience runs in the family.

I would kill to have a teacher that worded it that way, instead of the usual pathological-naming-and-shaming they've been going in for since the mid-70s....

They...name other children? That's weird. I've never seen that before. It's always 'her friends' or 'classmates'.

I just realised that I follow you on tumblr, because I saw when you posted this earlier. (I think. Maybe it's deja vu!)

Cool. Well, either you are following me or there is a mirror twin version of myself living my same life. Which in that case, I feel sorry for their nephew too.

Alas, the primary thing I can think of did not skip me: for the last four generations, the women in my family have suffered through a housefire. It happened to my great-grandmother, my grandmother and mother (to be fair, that was the same fire; they were both living in the same house at the time), and to me. It is my hope that it happening to me means it will skip my sister, though.

Does seeing ghosts count?

My great-Grandma saw the ghost of her father the night before her wedding.

Then my Nana saw the ghost of her father, during her wedding, sitting in one of the pews.

It skipped my Mum because Grandad is still alive (so was there at the wedding anyways).

I think it's kind of neat. Like ghosts don't want to miss out of their daughters big day. (And/or the daughters wanted their fathers to be there so much they imagined them. Still! Family togetherness and peace!)

Lol, pretty much everyone in my family has been stepped on a by a bull except me. XD We're talking some serious injuries here too--my gramps got a hoof in the stomach and it squashed his bellybutton over to the side. Me? I've never even been bucked before, thank my lucky stars.

Jinxed it. I'll probably be trampled to death next summer.

Alcoholism.

Skipped my grandad (because he was teetotal), hasn't got to me yet.
