I've tried third-person mode in Portal 2 and had the same camera and aiming issues that you describe. It's fun to mess around with but you can't really play the game using it (nor do I think you're meant to).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the only reason there's a third person view is because it's used in versus modes when you're waiting to respawn--it's only used for observation, not gameplay.

I know there's a L4D mod floating around that tries to make third-person more playable but it wasn't able to do much. :c
