I miss when fandoms had longevity, too. Some of the people that were involved really loved the canons, enough to stay with them for years, or even decades.

See, I kind of feel like people like that are sort of looked down upon as obsessive freaks in the current fandom culture, even though fandom itself was, you know, kind of built on that sort of thing. Which is why I fell in to it in the first place! Having really strong, enduring interests is fun, and people who love something like that are usually really neat folks, in my experience!

Nayrt

I have a media literacy background that encourages me to see a kind of consumerist push behind the way newer platforms encourage people to burn through and discard their fandoms. Planned obsolescence on hyperdrive, if you will.

My bias tends to run in the opposite direction - I get into fandoms for the ridiculously long haul and would prefer to have other people creating stuff with me, but I'd be there with or without them. So although part of fandom that considers this way obsessive, I think it's equally (in)valid to consider their ceaseless flitting wasteful and shallow. I much prefer discussion, analyisis, and friendships where you get to know your fellow fans over the course of years, but even though I want more of that, there isn't one right way to have fun. Even though Tumblr makes my head spin, I've seen people write and rp deep, worthwhile things on it.

There are two things I really don't get about fandom, on an emotional level. One is the way some fans invest whatever extra cash they may have in merchandise with a canon tie-in. I've never felt like the extra stuff, illustrated Disney books to Star Wars action figures, gave me anything that added to the original story. Two is the way some fans can just walk away from a story they used to love passionately. There are authors I respect a lot, who take the time and effort to really get into their characters' heads and write them uniquely, who've only contributed a handful of stories to fandoms I follow because they move on so regularly. It's kind of ... I see it, but I don't understand. They clearly love their canons, and I love mine, but the natural expression of that is completely different.

Otoh, if there are so many of us that crave long term involvement, surely there are still platforms out there that lend themselves to it? We can make what we want to see.

I wonder the lack of longevity has something to do with how easily we (speaking as an American) can access foreign media now? (This doesn't apply to Western fandoms so much, but that wasn't where my interest was at the time fansites like this were common.) "Back in the day" there were a handful of anime or manga that came over to the US and were broadcast or available in some way. If you wanted something that didn't air on TV, you mail-ordered VHS tapes that had five episodes or so at a time. Having fewer big fandoms seemed to make people more interested in sticking with them.

Now we get the shiniest and newest series as soon as they air, with no need to wait for any type of official licensing (but if you do want dubs, there are huge sections of DVDs wherever you buy your media.) We have such easy access to new stuff, which is generally an awesome thing because you can find so much more. But at the same time it makes it easier to fandom-hop, both because there are so many choices and because once a series ends, something else can take its place.

Maybe it's not this, and it's just the evolution of fandom. I could be overthinking it, haha.

I still have copies of all my mail order fansubs. Which is sad, since I don't even own a working VCR anymore, but I feel so much guilt at the thought of throwing them out, lol.

That's awesome! I still have a VCR, but I can't say I've watched any of my old VHS stuff for years. I mostly remember borrowing and re-borrowing a friend's copies of fansubbed Weiß Kreuz. And I had a ton of the little two episode dubbed things that one company (Pioneer maybe?) kept putting out.

"SO WHO JACK OFF?" - Haha, sorry, I couldn't resist. The WK fansubs were the BEST THINGS EVER. Especially since they couldn't seem to decide what exactly Schuldich's name was supposed to be. That show also had an awesome fandom, despite having kind of questionable plot and less-than-stellar animation.

My friends and I used to take terms ordering series, then make copies and mail them to each other. I saw so much anime between that and the LCS that had some select dubs for rent. MEMORIES~

OMFG THE WEISS KREUZ SUBS

I swear half the reason I loved that show was because the subs were so hilarious, I literally cried with laughter. They couldn't decide on anyone's name, right? And the subs for the into thing were different every time. And they were really dedicated to making Ken look like a pedo.

oh the memories

KEN THE PEDO. Oh man, now I want to find a way to re-watch all my fansubs. They really were half the appeal of the series. That and the fandom was pretty awesome. And also the seiyuu liked to cosplay their characters and feel up mannequins. BEST SHOW EVER.

This secret and the comments have made me all nostalgic, lol.

I LOVED the WK fansubs. They were THE BEST. And the fandom was all kinds of crazy, but in such wonderful ways. It's one of those shows that objectively isn't very good, and I know it, and yet every time I decide to rewatch it, I remember that it was the best show ever made. :P

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, those fansubs were MAGICAL. And I agree that the fandom was awesome. I think the fact that everyone knew that objectively the show was kind of bad, but we all loved it anyway, just added to the awesome. Now I'm getting all sad and missing that fandom, lol. I feel like I should go trolling for fic or something.

A friend of mine commented on something like that the other day. HE says no matter what, he always goes back to the Star Wars fandom because it's pretty consistent with its fanbase. You get those who love just the OT, those who love just the movies, those who only deal with the EU up to NJO, etc. It's fairly constant and easy to find the not crazy ones.
