I don't know about the 'just deserts', but I do think there's something reassuring about the 'no glands, no emotions' thing (plus Death's character). Not that the lack in emotion in general would necessarily be great, should an afterlife exist... but the notion that even if your death were horribly traumatic you could just rise from your body and stop being affected by it...
