Question about Comments on Fic

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-12-24 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
So I wrote a fic and relative to the number of people who I assumed would read it, I got a lot of positive feedback. Which is great. Yay positivity!

Even though this thing was an ensemble piece primarily centered around a slash ship, I got a lot of positive comments on the fic about having really enjoyable female characters, which I was worried about so I was again, pleased.

The fandom's anon meme found it and didn't tear it apart which was again, lovely! And some really positive things were said. But some anons said the female characters felt flat and one note.

So now basically I'm really confused about whose opinion to trust? Do I trust the original commenters? Do I trust the anon meme? Or do I just mentally say thanks for the input and no matter what I'll continue to keep trying to improve, regardless of anyone's opinion?

How do you deal with conflicting comments, F!S?

Ignore them and keep going. There's no one thing that is amazing to every person, and good writing is entirely in the eye of the beholder.

Basically, take the last option.

You have to trust your own opinion over anyone else's. Just mentally say "thanks for the input" and improve what you think you have to improve.

I mean, if it's someone that you know and trust, then yeah, take their opinion into account. But random internet denizens with conflicting opinions? Don't sweat it.

It depends on your audience. If you're going to be writing for the anon meme, then take their criticisms into consideration in the future. If you're going to be writing for the first group who had left you reviews, then keep writing the characters as you have been.

I once wrote a fic in a new fandom and the writing style was hugely different from my usual style. My friends loved my fic and so I posted it in the fandom community only to have people rip it to shreds. Actually, they were mostly complimentary but every single person who left feedback pointed out some mistake I'd made, most of those mistakes being very problematic in that fandom. So it felt like my fic and I had both been ripped to shreds even though everyone was really nice about it. I was encouraged to keep working at it and write more in the fandom, but it was too far out of my comfort zone and not only did I never write there again, but I also stopped reading there because I felt like such a failure.

Here's the thing, Bio.

Your female characters didn't spend enough time adoring the male characters and their wub while also having entirely separate subplots that would have taken a lot more time to write.

Here I have a sample of good fic for you.

Male Character: Me and [Canon Antagonist] are getting gaymarried!

Female Character: I am acknowledging that and approve! Did we mention that I am a doctor and must fix cancer and don't need no man

Demiromantic asexual autistic celiac transman: I am present in this narrative!

But they did have their own subplots? I gave everyone their own thing to do outside of stuff to do with the main pairing.

Idk maybe they weren't good enough :P

Yes.

Also, people can have different opinions. It doesn't mean one is The Truth and the others are all false. Do what feels best to you in your own writing.
