I can name about a hundred principle players in The Dresden Files, but maybe match up about three names-to-faces of people I've met at cons this past year.

I am really bad with faces. Having trouble with eye contact doesn't help.

Maybe it's that books give you more immediate context? You know you're only going to encounter these characters in this book, and so you're ready for it, but random people who know you pop up everywhere.
